It really is hard to believe that a month ago Gov. DeWine ordered the schools in Ohio to close. It feels like it was AGES ago. Regardless of feeling, there are so many things that led up to this happening. Let me take a moment to go back to the beginning...
November - December 2019
I'm starting a new unit in my 8th grade Read180 class that deals with pandemics. This is important - TRUST me. I decide to do things differently this time around and add in some science. We do some experiments where they learn how viruses spread and where they swab the school to see what's growing. They are amazed, they are learning, they are grossed out. Yay me! We chug through about half of the unit before we get to winter break.
January 2020
I start hearing about a new virus in Wuhan China called Coronavirus. It seems to fit in well with what we are talking about in class. I do a little research, I listen to some reports from NPR, I talk to a coworker and we discuss how we are due for a 100-year pandemic. Since we are still talking about pandemics in class, I'm working on getting a doctor from the ID department at Cincinnati Children's Hospital to come to school. I get Dr. Rebecca Brady to come into class and the kids do AMAZING. They pay attention and ask great questions. She talks about Coronavirus a bit and explains that not much is known but we're paying attention to it. At this point, it's not present in the US except for Washington, Arizona, and Chicago and the cases are less than 100.
February 2020
We're still paying attention but also wrapping up our focus because we're almost done with our unit. Cases are still pretty isolated to those areas, but not a major concern. We still check the map and watch it spread around the globe. We finish Pandemics and move on to the book "Milkweed." I start rocking their world with the holocaust and other global events. Kids are invested and want to read the book. I start planning a field trip to the holocaust museum in Cincinnati and the kids are excited. Not because it's a field trip, but it's their chance to see some of the things I have been talking about and an opportunity to talk with a survivor. Regardless, my kids are invested in their learning.
Now, this is where things start changing rapidly -
End of February - World Health Organization (WHO) starts calling it a pandemic as it spreads rapidly around the world. The doctor who discovered the virus and tried to warn the Chinese government dies from it. Italy is becoming a hotspot. World leaders take two positions - defense to protect citizens or denial that the virus is something to even worry about. Some leaders
go on TV proclaiming the latter. Others start
social distancing early to try to prevent the worst. Our leaders aren't doing much of anything at this point except to say: It's not a problem it's totally under control, it's going to just disappear one day like a miracle.
March 2020 -
At the beginning of the month, there are 100 countries with the virus with over 100,000 infected.
March 8th there are more than 500 cases in the US in all but 15 states. It's been in the country for about a month and a half.
March 9th there are 3 people in Ohio who have tested positive. We are put under a state of emergency.
March 11th, the NBA suspends the season and Tom Hanks is diagnosed. Trump suspends travel to all of Europe except for the UK and Ireland. March 12th MLB, NHL, and NCAA suspend season/tournaments.
March 12th there are now 5 cases in Ohio. Schools ordered to close for three weeks.
March 15th there are now 37 people with the virus in Ohio. DeWine orders bars and restaurants to be closed.
March 18th there are now 88 people who are positive. DeWine orders barbershops, beauty and nail salons, and tattoo parlors closed.
March 22nd there are now 247 cases and 3 deaths in the state. DeWine issues the "stay at home" order. This is really a much calmer way of saying shelter in place and quarantine.
March 30th schools are ordered to stay closed until May 1st.
March 31st there are now 2200 cases and 55 deaths.
April 2020 -
April 3rd the stay at home order is extended. New restrictions are placed on businesses for how many people can be in the building at one time. Some places are putting up markers so you can see how far apart 6 feet is.
At this point, we're starting to see things get better in Ohio. We may or may not have hit our peak. With the weather turning warmer people may forget that they have to maintain distance. People are getting antsy and don't want to stay at home anymore. Some think this is a giant hoax to give the government more power.
It's not a hoax, it's very real.
I'll give my own personal reflections on the impact next time.
For now, stay safe and sane. Spend time with family and enjoy the little moments. We are in this together.
